Eye wrinkles and LED face masks: what the studies show
What two published studies say about LED light and wrinkles around the eyes, and how to use an LED face mask safely near the eyes. An overview of wavelengths, safety guidance and the LumenLuxe LED mask specifications.

Some studies suggest that red and nearby LED light may contribute to a better appearance of wrinkles around the eyes, but results depend on the device, the wavelength and how long it is used. The two studies summarised below assessed the skin after 4 to 16 weeks. When using an LED mask, always keep your eyes closed and covered with the eye shields.
At a glance
- A study of 137 women (aged 40–65) assessed eye-area wrinkle volume after 10 sessions over 4 weeks using 660 nm and 590 nm light.
- A double-blind, sham-controlled study (60 adults, 630 + 850 nm, 16 weeks) reported improvement in eye-area wrinkles at weeks 8, 12 and 16.
- Both studies tested other devices and wavelengths; their figures are not results of the LumenLuxe LED mask.
- Eyes should stay closed and protected by the shields included in the package.
- The pace of change is individual and is not a promise of results.
Can LED light help with wrinkles around the eyes?
The available research suggests that some wavelengths of red light may contribute to a better appearance of fine lines around the eyes, but it rests on a small number of studies using different devices. The skin around the eyes is thin, so it makes sense to combine a light routine with hydration and sun protection.
For a broader look at how red light relates to collagen and the look of wrinkles, see our article LED mask for wrinkles. Here we focus only on the eye area and on what two specific studies showed.
What did the Mota et al. (2023) study show?
The study of 137 women aged 40–65 compared 660 nm light on one half of the face with 590 nm on the other, over 10 sessions in 4 weeks. Eye-area wrinkle volume was measured with the VisioFace RD system.
The authors reported a reduction in eye-area wrinkle volume of 31.6% with 660 nm and 29.9% with 590 nm. The home device used in the study is not described, and a critical letter was published about the paper (PMID 37252792), so we treat it as one piece of evidence rather than a stand-alone proof. What did the Park et al. (2025) study show?
This two-centre, randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled study used a home mask with 630 nm and 850 nm light in 60 adults for 16 weeks. The authors report improvement in eye-area wrinkles at weeks 8, 12 and 16.
The design differs from the first study: a sham-device group makes it easier to tell the effect of the light apart from, for example, the effect of expectation. Source: PMC11835066, DOI 10.1097/MD.0000000000041596.
| Study | Participants | Wavelengths | Duration | Outcome assessed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mota et al., 2023 | 137 women, aged 40–65 | 660 nm and 590 nm (each half of the face) | 10 sessions over 4 weeks | Eye-area wrinkle volume: −31.6% (660 nm), −29.9% (590 nm) |
| Park et al., 2025 | 60 adults, sham control | 630 nm + 850 nm | 16 weeks | Improvement in eye-area wrinkles at weeks 8, 12 and 16 |
The cited studies tested other devices and wavelengths; their results are not results of the LumenLuxe mask.
How should you read the results of LED light studies?
Study figures describe specific devices, wavelengths and participant groups, so we see them as scientific context, not as a result of our mask. The red mode of the LumenLuxe LED mask works at 630 nm, a wavelength that also appears in one of the cited studies, but the pace and extent of change differ from person to person.
If you want to track your own progress, photograph your skin in the same light, from the same angle and at the same time of day, and keep a short routine diary. For a general view of what LED research shows and what it does not yet show, see Does an LED mask work?.
How do you use an LED mask around the eyes?
Keep your eyes closed at every session and put on the eye shields included with the LumenLuxe LED mask. In modes with blue light (460 nm), be especially consistent about using the shields.
Practical steps
- Do a patch test on the skin of your hand before first use; mild redness should fade within 1–2 hours, and if you feel burning, stop immediately.
- Use on clean skin; one session takes 10 minutes, with 3–5 sessions per week recommended.
- Start at a lower intensity (the mask has 5 levels) and adjust to your comfort.
- Use light-sensitising skincare (retinol, acids) at a different time of day than the LED mask.
- During the day, continue with moisturiser and SPF – the basis of caring for the skin around the eyes.
When should you not use an LED mask?
This applies to all LED masks: before use, make sure none of the following applies to you, and if in doubt, talk to your doctor.
- pregnancy,
- light-sensitive epilepsy,
- an active skin condition or infection in the treated area,
- retinal conditions,
- taking photosensitising medication (e.g. isotretinoin, some antibiotics).

Frequently asked questions
Can LED light smooth wrinkles around the eyes?
The studies did not look at wrinkles disappearing completely, but at changes in their appearance, such as volume. Skin responds individually, and LED light is just one part of a routine alongside moisturiser and SPF.
How long does it take for anything to change?
The cited studies assessed the skin after 4 to 16 weeks, but the pace of change is individual and is not a promise. For the LumenLuxe LED mask, 10 minutes per session, 3–5× per week is recommended.
Can I use the mask around the eyes too?
Yes, as long as your eyes are closed and the eye shields included in the package are in place. If you have a retinal condition or take photosensitising medication, do not use an LED mask.
Which wavelengths does the LumenLuxe LED mask have?
It has 7 modes: red 630 nm, blue 460 nm, green 520 nm, purple (630+460), yellow (630+520), cyan (520+460) and white (630+520+460). Output is 20 mW/cm² with 5 intensity levels.
Can I combine an LED mask with retinol?
Use retinol creams at a different time of day than the LED mask. Isotretinoin tablets are a contraindication – do not use an LED mask while taking them.
Conclusion
The two cited studies suggest that light in the red range may contribute to a better appearance of wrinkles around the eyes, but the results relate to specific devices and are not a promise. The LumenLuxe LED mask offers 7 modes, 210 LEDs, a 24-month warranty and 60 days to return – and eye shields come in the package.
